Use
Pervious Concrete: Pervious concrete is concrete that does not contain fine aggregate. It typically has a voids content of 15% to 35%. This ensures that the concrete has the unique ability to allow storm water to pass through its mass into the ground underneath. Pervious concrete offers significant environmental benefits as it reduces the requirement for drainage facilities. Further it facilitates the recharge of ground water and the filtration process purifies the water as it percolates below. |
| Recycle unused construction materials and demolition debris. |
| Material selection: Consider the recycled content of the product (as well as what percentage is actually post-consumer waste) and the Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions of the material |
| Work with a knowledgeable mechanical engineer to implement energy efficient heating and cooling systems. Using variable speed drive chillers, VAV zoning or a chiller refrigerant such as HFC 134 (no CFCs, HCFCs, or Halon) can all reduce energy consumption and building emissions. |
| Use appropriate sun shading devices where necessary to reduce solar heat gain and its impact on mechanical systems and energy consumption. |
| Use a cool roof reduce the heat island effect and solar heat gain. |
| Landscape with indigenous vegetation, it requires less irrigation. |
| Reduce light pollution and energy consumption by designing lighting that exclusively illuminates the site and not the surrounding. |
| Implement light or motion sensitive lighting controls to reduce unnecessary energy consumption. |
| Use low-flow toilets and water conserving fixtures. |
| Thermal Comfort- Temperature and Humidity Control per ASHRAE 55 latest version. |
| Plant trees - Shade a minimum of 35% of a parking lot with trees. |
| Use permeable concrete surfaces at exterior to replenish the the ground water table. |
| Do not use CFC based refrigerants containing HVAC equipment. |
| Reduce Ozone depletion. Do not use HCFC containing refrigerants or fire suppression system containing Halon. |
